Professor Ju-Won Oh Appointed to Korea Radioactive Waste Agency Groundwater Standard Technical Committee

[Jeonju=GeoVis] Professor Ju-Won Oh of the Computational Geophysics Lab of Jeonbuk National University (JBCGL) announced that he has been appointed as a member of the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) Groundwater Standard Technical Committee.

The appointment period is from June 23, 2023, to December 31, 2023, and he will be responsible for establishing and reviewing technical standards for groundwater environment safety management around nuclear facilities.

KORAD is a government-affiliated organization dedicated to radioactive waste management and nuclear environment remediation, performing national tasks for the safe decommissioning of nuclear facilities and disposal of radioactive waste. In particular, groundwater monitoring and management are key elements in ensuring environmental safety around nuclear facilities.

The Groundwater Standard Technical Committee is responsible for developing and reviewing technical standards for groundwater investigation, analysis, and monitoring related to nuclear facility decommissioning and radioactive waste disposal. The committee conducts technical reviews on groundwater flow analysis, contaminant transport prediction, and long-term monitoring plans.

Professor Ju-Won Oh was selected as a member in recognition of his expertise in geophysical exploration and groundwater research. In particular, his accumulated experience in subsurface structure analysis and groundwater characterization using geophysical methods such as magnetotellurics (MT) and seismic exploration was highly valued.

Groundwater is one of the main pathways for radioactive materials, making it a very important factor in the safety management of nuclear facilities. Accurate understanding of groundwater flow and establishment of long-term monitoring systems are essential for nuclear environmental safety.

An official from KORAD stated, "Professor Ju-Won Oh's expertise in geophysical exploration will be a great help in developing groundwater standard technology." They added, "We will further enhance nuclear environmental safety by establishing scientific and systematic groundwater management standards."

Professor Ju-Won Oh stated, "Nuclear environmental safety is a critical issue directly related to public life." He added, "I will do my best to establish safe and reliable groundwater management technical standards based on my geophysical expertise."
