Researcher Sea-Eun Park Departs for Long-Term Dispatch to NTNU-NGI, Norway
[Trondheim=GeoVis] Sea-Eun Park, a PhD candidate researcher at the Computational Geophysics Lab of Jeonbuk National University (JBCGL), announced her departure for collaborative research at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI).
Sea-Eun Park will conduct long-term dispatch research in Norway for approximately seven months, from September 1, 2023, to March 23, 2024. This dispatch was made possible through the 'Global Innovative Talent Nurturing for Geophysical Exploration and Monitoring' project, part of the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning's Energy Human Resources Development Project - Energy New Industry Global.
The dispatch period will proceed in two phases. First, she will conduct collaborative research with Professor Alexey Stovas at NTNU for three months, and then with Dr. Joonsang Park at NGI for four months.
Professor Alexey Stovas is a world-renowned authority in seismic anisotropy, with unique research achievements in petroleum exploration and CCS monitoring. Dr. Joonsang Park is a key researcher at NGI, leading convergent research in geotechnical engineering and geophysical exploration technology.
The core topic of this dispatch research is demonstration research on integrated seismic/electromagnetic monitoring of Sleipner. The Sleipner project is the world's first commercial CCS project, operating in the Norwegian North Sea since 1996, with the advantage of enabling research using actual field data.
Integrated monitoring technology is an advanced technique that simultaneously utilizes seismic and electromagnetic exploration to observe changes in underground reservoirs from multiple perspectives. It is considered an innovative technology that overcomes the limitations of single exploration techniques and significantly improves monitoring accuracy.
NTNU is a leading engineering university in Norway, with world-class research capabilities, particularly in petroleum engineering and marine engineering. NGI is a world-renowned research institution in geotechnical engineering, recognized for its unique expertise in seabed geotechnics and CCS-related technologies.
This research achievement is expected to contribute significantly to domestic CCS monitoring technology self-reliance. Both institutions possess world-class geophysical monitoring technology, and the skills and experience Sea-Eun Park will acquire are expected to directly help domestic technological development.
Sea-Eun Park has previously gained research experience at institutions such as MIT and LBNL in the United States, and through this dispatch to Norway, she is expected to further broaden her international network and research capabilities.
