Researcher Hyeonggeun Ji Departs for Long-Term Dispatch to University of Calgary, Canada

[Calgary=GeoVis] Hyeonggeun Ji, a master's student researcher at the Computational Geophysics Lab of Jeonbuk National University (JBCGL), announced his departure for Calgary to conduct collaborative research with the University of Calgary in Canada.

Hyeonggeun Ji will conduct long-term dispatch research at the University of Calgary for approximately seven months, from September 1, 2023, to March 23, 2024. This dispatch was promoted with support from the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning's Geophysical Exploration and Monitoring Global Innovative Talent Nurturing Project.

At the University of Calgary, he will conduct collaborative research with Professor Kristopher Innanen, a world-renowned authority in geophysics. Professor Innanen is a top expert in seismic imaging and inversion technology, and has achieved unique results in developing high-resolution imaging techniques for complex subsurface structures.

The core topic of this dispatch research is demonstration research on 4D seismic monitoring using VSP data from the CaMI project in Canada. The CaMI (Consortium for Advanced Monitoring and Injection) project is a large-scale CCS demonstration project underway in Alberta, Canada, with the advantage of enabling research using actual field data.

VSP (Vertical Seismic Profiling) is an advanced seismic exploration technique that precisely images subsurface structures using receivers installed in boreholes. In particular, 4D VSP is considered a very effective technology for monitoring changes in underground reservoirs over time.

The University of Calgary is a prestigious university located in Alberta, Western Canada, and is particularly renowned globally in the fields of petroleum engineering and earth sciences. It provides a practical research environment linked to the abundant oil and gas resources in the vicinity.

During his dispatch, Hyeonggeun Ji plans to analyze actual VSP data from the CaMI project and develop new 4D monitoring algorithms. He also plans to visit other CCS project sites in Canada to understand global CCS technology trends.

The Global Innovative Talent Nurturing Project is a government-supported program aimed at fostering next-generation global leaders in the energy sector. Selected researchers gain long-term research experience at world-class overseas research institutions and build international networks.
