🔬 Basic Sciences Division

The Basic Sciences Division (BSC) provides the theoretical foundation and fundamental science support that underpins all applied research across the lab, with the goal of becoming a recognized center for interdisciplinary basic science bridging theory and application. It spans five core domains - mathematics and numerical methods, physics and wave mechanics, chemistry and geochemistry, earth sciences and geodynamics, and biology and biogeochemistry - developing fundamental theories and mathematical frameworks that other divisions draw on for applied, resource- and hazard-oriented work.

Mathematics Center

Develops mathematical foundations for geophysical modeling, spanning PDEs for wave propagation, inverse theory and regularization, Bayesian inference and uncertainty quantification, and stochastic processes for reservoir modeling.

Applies fundamental physics - elastic wave theory in anisotropic media, Maxwell's electromagnetic field equations, thermodynamic modeling of subsurface fluids, and gravitational potential theory - to geophysical phenomena.

Investigates geochemical processes, mineral reactions, and fluid-rock interactions relevant to energy resource extraction, covering CO2 mineralization kinetics, PHREEQC-based speciation modeling, hydrocarbon PVT behavior, and clay diagenesis.
