Geophysics Computing Lab Selected for Korea-Middle East Inter-State Cooperation Project

[Jeonju=GeoVis] The Geophysics Computing Lab at Jeonbuk National University announced on the 28th that it has been selected for the National Research Foundation of Korea's Inter-State Cooperation Project (Korea-Middle East).

The selected project is titled 'Development of Seismic Survey Data Processing and Subsurface Fluid Monitoring Technology Using Distributed Fiber Optic Systems', and it will receive a total of 210 million won in research funding over three years, from December 1, 2019, to November 30, 2022.

This project aims to develop next-generation geophysical monitoring technology using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). DAS is an innovative sensor technology that provides higher spatial resolution and a wider measurement range compared to conventional geophones.

The research team plans to develop DAS-based seismic data processing algorithms and implement real-time monitoring technology for subsurface fluids (oil, gas, groundwater, etc.) through international collaborative research with research institutions in the Middle East.

In particular, it focuses on developing a monitoring system that operates stably even in the complex geological environments and extreme climatic conditions of the Middle East, which is expected to significantly improve resource exploration efficiency and environmental monitoring accuracy.

The Korea-Middle East Inter-State Cooperation Project is a national strategic project aimed at strengthening research capabilities between the two regions and building a global science and technology network through scientific and technological cooperation with the Middle East.

A lab official stated, "Through this project, we will accelerate the practical application of DAS technology and establish a continuous research cooperation relationship with the Middle East region."
