Geophysics Computing Lab Selected for Regional University Scientist Project

[Jeonju=GeoVis] The Geophysics Computing Lab at Jeonbuk National University announced on the 28th that it has been selected for the National Research Foundation of Korea's Regional University Scientist Project.

The selected project is titled 'Development of Efficient 3D Frequency-Domain Seismic Imaging Technology Using Multicomponent Seismic Survey Data', and it will receive a total of 150 million won in research funding over three years, from June 1, 2020, to May 31, 2023.

The Regional University Scientist Project is a program operated by the National Research Foundation of Korea to strengthen the research capabilities of regional universities, providing intensive support to researchers affiliated with regional universities who can produce excellent research results.

This research focuses on developing high-resolution 3D subsurface imaging technology using multicomponent seismic data. Compared to conventional single-component data, it can simultaneously utilize P-wave and S-wave information for more accurate and detailed subsurface structure analysis.

In particular, the key objective is to significantly reduce computation time while improving imaging quality by developing efficient processing algorithms in the frequency domain. This technology can greatly enhance the practicality of processing large-volume 3D seismic data.

The developed technology can be applied in various fields such as resource exploration, geological hazard assessment, and ground stability analysis, and is expected to contribute to securing the international competitiveness of domestic geophysical exploration technology.

A lab official stated, "Through the selection of the Regional University Scientist Project, we have gained an opportunity to conduct creative and challenging research." They added, "We will develop world-class seismic imaging technology."
