Researcher Hyun-Wook Jo Departs for Long-Term Dispatch to Curtin University, Australia

[Perth=GeoVis] Hyun-Wook Jo, a master's student researcher at the Geophysics Computing Lab of Jeonbuk National University, announced his departure for Perth to conduct global collaborative research with Curtin University in Australia.

Hyun-Wook Jo will conduct long-term dispatch research at Curtin University for approximately eight months, from August 1, 2023, to March 23, 2024. This dispatch was promoted with support from the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning's 2023 Global Innovative Talent Nurturing Project.

At Curtin University, he will conduct collaborative research with Professor Roman Pevzner, a world-renowned authority in the CCS field. Professor Pevzner is a key researcher at the National Geosequestration Hub in Australia and possesses unparalleled expertise in carbon storage monitoring.

The core topic of this dispatch research is demonstration research on 4D borehole seismic monitoring of the Otway Project. The Otway Project is a world-class CCS demonstration project underway in Victoria, Australia, and is a representative onshore CCS project that has been operating since 2008.

4D borehole seismic monitoring is a cutting-edge technology that precisely observes changes in underground reservoirs over time through sensors installed in boreholes. It provides much higher resolution and accuracy than conventional surface seismic monitoring, playing a crucial role in verifying the safety of CCS projects.

The Computational Geophysics Lab of Jeonbuk National University (JBCGL) is currently conducting large-scale international collaborative research with seven institutions in five countries through the Global Innovative Talent Nurturing Project. This project, involving top research institutions from Korea, Australia, Norway, the United States, and Canada, aims to standardize CCS technology globally.

Curtin University is a prestigious university located in Perth, Western Australia, and is particularly renowned globally in the fields of earth science and petroleum engineering. It provides a practical research environment linked to the largest iron ore mining region in Australia, located nearby.

During his dispatch, Hyun-Wook Jo plans to analyze actual monitoring data from the Otway Project and develop new interpretation algorithms. He also plans to visit other CCS project sites in Australia to understand global CCS technology trends.
