Exploration of Curtin University's Perth and Kalgoorlie Campuses in Australia

[Perth=GeoVis] The Geophysics Computing Lab research team at Jeonbuk National University announced that they visited Curtin University's Perth and Kalgoorlie campuses consecutively, engaging in active exchanges with local researchers.

This visit was made possible with support from the LINC Frontier 3.0 Global Competency Enhancement Program and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning.

At the Perth Campus, they visited the Center for Exploration Geophysics, where they engaged in in-depth academic exchanges with world-renowned geophysicist Professor Boris Gurevich and local researchers. Professor Gurevich is a leading authority in rock physics and seismic anisotropy, holding a unique position in the international academic community.

A particularly noteworthy experience was the practical training conducted at the National Geosequestration Laboratory. The research team directly participated in borehole data processing training using Vibroseis and DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) technologies.

Vibroseis is a seismic exploration technique using large vibrators, an advanced technology that is environmentally friendly and can acquire high-resolution data. DAS is an innovative monitoring technology that uses optical fibers as sensors to detect continuous acoustic signals throughout the borehole.

At the Kalgoorlie Campus, they interacted with Professor Jang Hyung-doo to understand the latest research trends in mineral resources. Kalgoorlie is the largest gold mining area in Western Australia, providing a practical research environment linked to actual mining sites.

The highlight of the visit was a tour of the Super-pit, the world's largest open-pit mine. This massive gold mine, 3.5 km long, 1.5 km wide, and 600 m deep, is a world-renowned mine that produces approximately 850,000 ounces of gold annually.

The researchers directly observed the large-scale mining operation system and advanced mining technologies at the Super-pit, vividly experiencing how geophysical exploration technology is utilized in actual mineral resource development.

They also participated in the Open Day event held on campus, networking with local students and company representatives. This allowed them to gather information on current trends in the Australian resource development industry and the job market.

Curtin University is a leading engineering-focused university in Western Australia, with world-class research capabilities, particularly in mineral resources and petroleum engineering. It is renowned for its practical education and research linked to the abundant mineral resources in the vicinity.

Professor Ju-Won Oh evaluated the achievements, stating, "It was a valuable opportunity to experience world-class research facilities and actual mining sites simultaneously." He added, "In particular, the practical training in DAS and Vibroseis technologies further enhanced our lab's technical capabilities."
