Aker Solutions Engineer Moon Seok-ki Visits Lab

[Jeonju=GeoVis] Moon Seok-ki, an engineer from Aker Solutions, a leading Norwegian engineering company, visited the Computational Geophysics Lab of Jeonbuk National University (JBCGL) and held a special seminar.

On August 14th, Engineer Moon Seok-ki visited the lab and gave a seminar on 'Zero emission underwater power station (ZEUS project)'. In this seminar, he provided a detailed introduction to the current status and prospects of next-generation carbon-free underwater power plant technology.

Aker Solutions is a global engineering company headquartered in Norway, possessing world-class technology within the top 5 in the field of CO₂ capture and injection equipment manufacturing. In particular, it plays a key role in large-scale CCS projects in the North Sea region and is considered a leader in carbon-neutral technology development.

The ZEUS project is an innovative underwater power plant development project promoted by Aker Solutions. This project aims to build a complete carbon-free energy system by combining offshore wind power generation and CO₂ capture technology.

The seminar focused on power plant operation technology in marine environments, integrated operation plans for CO₂ capture and storage systems, and connection technology with offshore wind power. In particular, the practicality and economic feasibility were specifically explained through case studies of technologies actually applied in the Norwegian North Sea.

Engineer Moon Seok-ki emphasized, "The ZEUS project is not just a power plant, but an integrated system that performs carbon capture and storage simultaneously." He added, "This project presents a new paradigm for future energy systems."

After the seminar, there was also time for communication with the lab students. Students actively asked questions about practical experience in overseas engineering companies, methods of participating in international projects, and characteristics of the Norwegian energy industry.

This visit was a meaningful occasion where the Geophysics Computing Lab's CCS technology research met Aker Solutions' practical experience. In particular, discussions were held on the synergy between the CCS monitoring technology being conducted in the lab and Aker Solutions' equipment technology.

Professor Ju-Won Oh stated, "It was very beneficial to have the opportunity to directly communicate with field experts from a world-leading engineering company." He added, "We will continue to strive to ensure that the lab's technology is utilized in actual fields through industry-academia cooperation."
