The Applied Geoscience Solutions Division (AGS) applies geophysical and geological technologies to solve real-world societal and industrial challenges, bridging fundamental research and practical application to create tangible impact. Its ten centers span the full arc of applied geoscience - from carbon storage and nuclear waste disposal to oil, gas, and geothermal development, geohazard monitoring, renewable energy infrastructure (notably offshore wind), critical mineral exploration, site characterization, environmental geoscience, and special applications such as archaeology, forensics, and defense.

Oil & Gas Exploration Project Center

Simulates the full hydrocarbon exploration workflow — from basin analysis through drilling and appraisal — using play-fairway analysis, seismic-attribute/DHI detection, and basin/petroleum-systems modeling, evaluating the success probability of wildcat-drilling and formation-testing scenarios.

Critical Minerals Exploration Center

Assesses the potential of critical minerals for the energy transition — lithium, rare earths, cobalt, nickel, and graphite — through geochemical/geophysical data analysis and exploration simulation, modeling geometallurgical processes to optimize recovery.

Carbon Capture & Storage Project Center

Designs and verifies industrial-scale CCS (carbon capture and storage) demonstration projects through simulation and digital-twin modeling — spanning injection-site selection, reservoir modeling, seismic/pressure-temperature monitoring scenarios, full MRV (monitoring, reporting, and verification) protocols, and long-term behavior forecasting, all built on data-driven simulation of the CCS project lifecycle.

Applied Geothermal Energy Project Center

Verifies the feasibility of commercial geothermal power and district-heating systems under sustainable reservoir management through thermal-reservoir simulation, designing slim-hole drilling plans, production/injection well balancing, and reinjection strategy via thermodynamic modeling and real-time monitoring scenarios.

Nuclear Waste Disposal Project Center

Designs and evaluates deep geological repositories for high-level radioactive waste with multi-barrier safety systems, running 10,000-year performance-assessment simulations informed by host-rock characterization data, engineered-barrier models, and natural-analogue studies.

Offshore Wind Farm Project Center

Models the geotechnical feasibility of offshore wind installations using seabed mapping, marine seismic/sub-bottom profiling, and CPT-based soil data, optimizing the structural stability of monopile/jacket foundation designs through simulation.

Environmental Geoscience Center

Evaluates the environmental impact of energy projects through groundwater contamination transport modeling and geochemical fingerprinting, simulating EIA scenarios and the effectiveness of remediation techniques such as phytoremediation and in-situ chemical oxidation.

Geohazards & Monitoring Project Center

Detects and assesses geohazards in energy project areas — landslides, subsidence, and induced seismicity — using InSAR-based deformation data and slope-stability modeling, and designs/validates early-warning systems and traffic-light protocols through simulation.

Land Site Survey & Assessment Center

Reconstructs subsurface site characteristics for infrastructure projects — tunnels, dams, industrial facilities — by integrating engineering-geological mapping, GPR, and borehole data with ground modeling, and evaluates rock-quality classification and hydrogeological behavior through simulation.
