Hydrogen Energy & Storage Department

The Hydrogen Energy & Storage Department teaches the subsurface storage technologies needed to buffer the intermittency of renewable power. Students run injection-withdrawal cycle simulations for salt caverns, depleted reservoirs, and aquifers to learn how storage operations actually behave, then work through H2-rock geochemical reactivity and salt-cavern stability analysis, along with diagnosing and mitigating microbial risks that can arise during storage. Through this work, graduates become practitioners who can evaluate the safety and operational feasibility of seasonal hydrogen energy-buffering systems on their own.
